DRDO Launches CBRN Centre in Delhi to Boost Nuclear Readiness

New Delhi: Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) inaugurated a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) training and demonstration centre in Burari, Delhi, on May 7, 2026. The facility is part of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine & Allied Sciences (INMAS) and aims to strengthen national preparedness for nuclear and radiological threats.
Dr. Samir V Kamat, DRDO chairman, officiated the inauguration. He highlighted the centre’s role in bridging theoretical knowledge and practical response capabilities for unconventional hazards.
The centre houses advanced infrastructure: a radiological and nuclear test bed for validating detection technologies, a heavy ion research laboratory, and dedicated emergency medical response units. These will provide real-time field training for personnel from defence, home ministries, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and other crisis response agencies.
Officials emphasized that the test bed facility creates controlled environments to test radiation detection systems and hazardous material protocols. This supports research in nuclear science, materials testing, and emergency drills. The heavy ion research component focuses on developing countermeasures against nuclear and biological threats.
Training will cover coordinated responses to CBRN incidents, integrating technical and medical interventions. The centre’s design reflects DRDO’s focus on multi-agency collaboration for comprehensive threat management.
