A road collapse occurred recently in the Chandan Nagar area of Gurgaon, specifically near Sector 15 Part 2, creating significant safety risks for those traveling on foot and by vehicle. The incident has forced authorities to implement immediate safety measures, including the placement of caution tape and barricades to isolate the damaged stretch of the road.
According to officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), the cave-in happened above an underground sewer pipeline. Preliminary investigations suggest that a long-standing leak in the pipeline is the primary cause. Officials believe that wastewater seeped into the surrounding ground over a prolonged period, which eroded the soil beneath the road surface. This erosion eventually created a cavity, leading to the surface collapse.
The resulting cave-in has reduced the width of the available carriageway, which has disrupted the flow of traffic in the vicinity. To manage the congestion, traffic authorities are currently working on a set of diversion plans to guide vehicles away from the danger zone. MCG officials have stated that the restoration process is scheduled to begin on Tuesday night. This project will involve the complete replacement of the damaged sewer line and the subsequent restoration of the collapsed road surface.
An engineer from the MCG stated, “We are going to replace the sewerage line. The repair work will start on Tuesday night, and we are hoping to complete it within a few days.” To ensure a smooth process, the civic body has coordinated with the traffic department to regulate vehicular movement and implement necessary diversions while the repairs are underway.
Adding further context to the situation, Anup Singh, the councillor for Ward 25, mentioned that the affected stretch is already slated for a major redevelopment project to turn it into a model road. This project has been awarded a work order with an estimated cost of ₹8.5 crore, and it already includes a proposal to replace the existing sewer network. However, Singh noted that the cave-in might not be solely the result of the sewer leak. He pointed out that several other underground utilities, such as internet and telecom cables, run through the same area. He suggested that improper restoration after previous utility work could have contributed to the road’s failure and emphasized that a detailed technical assessment is required to determine the exact cause.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among local residents regarding the state of the city’s ageing underground infrastructure. Arun Bansal, a resident of Sector 15 Part 2, expressed alarm over the potential for serious accidents. He highlighted that this is not the first time a cave-in has occurred on this particular stretch and urged the MCG to find a permanent solution. Bansal emphasized the importance of this road, as it serves as a critical link connecting Sector 14 and MG Road.
The incident underscores the urgent need for better mechanisms to detect underground leaks before they lead to catastrophic surface failures. As the MCG prepares for the Tuesday night repair work, the focus remains on restoring the road’s structural integrity and ensuring the safety of the commuting public in this busy part of Gurgaon.
