In Sector 3 of Greater Noida West, a series of water‑pipeline leaks have left residents without reliable supply and roads compromised. Over the last month, the aging pipeline has produced ten separate leakages that have flooded streets, submerged pavements and caused cave‑ins in the area.
Residents first noted a burst at around 8 am this week when a pipe failed, leaving a section of D‑Block road underwater. The sudden influx of water weakened the road surface, leading to a cave‑in that disrupted local traffic. By the following day, the leak had spread, reducing pressure across the sector so severely that many households received little or no water.
Repeated patch‑repair attempts have failed to hold the pipe in place. “The entire pipeline needs to be replaced. Simply fixing patches daily won’t help. It will just burst again,” said Ashish Kumar, a resident of the area. Others have echoed the sentiment. Deo Raj Tiwari pointed out that the low pressure itself is a problem, while Sushil Kumar Jain called for simultaneous road reconstruction.
When residents complained to the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), they reported no lasting solution had been offered. GNIDA technical supervisor Sandeep Sagar confirmed that a replacement had been approved. “I spoke to the senior officer, and the pipeline will be replaced this week. A ductile iron line will be installed,” he told the Times of India.
The new ductile‑iron line is expected to be more durable and resistant to corrosion, addressing the frequent failures of the current pipeline. After the installation, normal water supply is expected to resume and road repairs should follow soon, allowing traffic to return to its usual flow.
Given the repeated damage, the community stresses that patchwork fixes are insufficient. “We need a comprehensive overhaul of the pipeline and roads,” added Kumar. The GNIDA statement that the replacement will occur within the week has provided some relief, but residents remain vigilant, monitoring the new installation closely.
Urban infrastructure failures such as this are not uncommon in rapidly developing cities across India. The NCR region, which includes Gurgaon and Greater Noida, has seen numerous instances where aging water mains cause sudden disruptions and pose safety risks.
