A school bus crashed into a divider in Gurugram’s Sector 81 on Monday morning, leaving witnesses alleging the driver was under the influence of alcohol and fled the scene. The incident occurred around 10 am near the Ultra Heights society when the RPS School bus attempted to navigate a circular junction.
The bus apparently tried to swerve to avoid hitting another vehicle on the wrong side of the road. Instead of stopping, the bus continued onto the divider, causing it to overturn. Fortunately, no students were on board at the time of the crash, which could have resulted in a much more tragic outcome.
Witnesses rushed to the scene immediately after the accident. They claim the driver was found to be drunk and attempted to drive away from the overturned bus. The driver eventually got out and ran off, leaving the damaged vehicle behind.
An official from RPS School Dhakuheda confirmed to Gurugram News Network that the bus was picking up children from the Wategaon area when the accident happened. The transport officer, Ajit, stated that the driver may have been trying to avoid an oncoming car that approached from the wrong side. However, he admitted that multiple people contacted him claiming the driver had been drinking and escaped the scene out of fear.
In a statement, Ajit suggested the driver might have fled due to fear of retaliation from angry onlookers who may have misunderstood the situation. The school administration has announced it will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. If negligence is proven, strict action will be taken against the driver.
The Gurgaon RTA department has begun a comprehensive checking campaign for private school buses starting Monday. Officials say they will register an FIR against any school bus found violating rules during the checking drive. This incident raises fresh questions about the safety of school transportation in the city, particularly regarding driver conduct and vehicle maintenance.
