Gurugram police have detained 13 Bangladeshi nationals who were found residing and working illegally at various construction sites across the city. The operation took place over two days as part of a special verification drive conducted by the Sector 39 crime branch under the supervision of DCP (crime) Hitesh Yadav. The teams searched labour colonies, slum clusters and construction sites after receiving specific intelligence inputs about suspected illegal migrants.
The detained individuals were identified as Arif, Sumon Ali, Sabir Hussain, Rubal, Sakib, Robiul, Gulzar Hussain, Naeem, Mehboob, Hamidur Islam, Atiyar Rahman and Mohammad Hesan. Most of them are in the 20‑30 age group and were employed as labourers at different building projects. According to police, the men had entered India through the West Bengal border, specifically the Kaliaganj point, with the assistance of agents.
During the verification process, police recovered documents linked to the detainees’ Bangladeshi citizenship. A police officer stated, “During verification, documents linked to their Bangladeshi citizenship were recovered. They were staying here illegally and working at multiple construction sites.” The officer added that several of the detainees admitted during questioning that they had crossed into India illegally.
Sumon Ali told TOI, “Yes, I am a Bangladesh citizen and was staying here for the past four years. Police detained me from a construction site.” He said he entered India in 2022 and had been living and working in Gurugram since then. Another detainee, Arif, said he entered India in 2024 for employment and was picked up from a construction site near Tulip Chowk in Sector 70.
After medical examinations conducted on Tuesday, the 13 men are to be shifted to the “deportation centre” at Sector 1 in IMT Manesar. They will remain there until all necessary documentation is completed. An officer explained the next steps: “The Bangladesh high commission will be informed. They will be handed over to the BSF after completion of all documentation. The BSF will then transfer them to Bangladeshi officials across the border.”
Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan emphasized that the drive is part of a wider district‑wide verification exercise covering slum settlements, rented accommodations, industrial areas, hotels and commercial establishments. He said, “This exercise is being carried out keeping national security and public safety in mind. No foreign national or Indian citizen living legally will face harassment.”
The current action follows a similar operation nearly a year earlier, when 10 Bangladeshi nationals were detained and later sent back to Bangladesh through the BSF after completing legal formalities. Officials said the ongoing verification is aimed at identifying foreign nationals residing in the city without valid documents and has prompted appeals to residents to verify tenants, domestic helpers and workers employed at shops and businesses.
