Authorities in Gurgaon have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against comedian Pranit More and an individual from the audience, Himanshu Jangra. This legal action comes after a video clip from a live performance went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage and leading to the intervention of the National Commission for Women (NCW).
The controversy stems from an interaction during a comedy show held in the city. During the performance, Himanshu Jangra shared a personal anecdote regarding a date he had. In the recorded clip, Jangra mentioned spending ₹370 on a plate of chicken biryani. He further suggested that because he had covered the cost of the outing, he expected some form of return when the woman requested that he drop her off at her home later.
Once the video began circulating on social media platforms, it drew heavy criticism from women’s rights advocates and various internet users. Critics argued that the comments made during the show trivialized the concept of consent and promoted attitudes that damage the dignity of women. Many users demanded that the individuals involved be held legally accountable for the remarks.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) took serious note of the content and filed a formal complaint. In its submission, the NCW expressed deep concern over how the conduct was presented to a public audience. The commission highlighted that glorifying or normalizing behavior that undermines bodily autonomy, dignity, and consent for women could lead to broader social consequences and negatively impact attitudes toward gender-based violence.
Following the complaint, the DLF Phase 2 police station registered an FIR under Section 67 of the Information Technology (IT) Act. Additionally, the FIR includes sections 294, 353(3), 75(2), and 75(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These charges encompass the circulation of objectionable material, the dissemination of obscene content, sexual harassment, making sexually coloured remarks, and spreading information that is considered harmful.
Vijaya Rahatkar, the chairperson of the NCW, contacted the Haryana DGP to request immediate and time-bound action regarding the matter. Alongside the NCW’s complaint, the Gurgaon police also took suo motu cognisance of the video’s content. Investigations have been launched to examine the circumstances under which the show took place and how the video was circulated online.
Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan stated that legal notices have been issued to both Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra, instructing them to join the ongoing investigation. He noted that further legal steps will be determined based on the findings of the inquiry. Turan emphasized that any activity violating the honour and dignity of women will not be tolerated and that strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
Furthermore, the police have reached out to relevant social media platforms, sending notices to request the removal of the video to prevent it from spreading further. The police have also issued a warning to social media users, urging them to be cautious when creating or sharing online content, noting that legal action can be taken against those who violate the law.
