Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been consistently urging citizens across the country to reduce petrol and diesel consumption and turn fuel conservation into a mass movement. Against this backdrop, the sight of a long convoy accompanying Union Minister Rao Indrajit Singh during his visit to Gurugram has turned into a subject of public debate.

On Tuesday, the minister’s convoy passed in front of the Gurugram District Collector’s office. Around 10 or more vehicles were seen moving together at that time. However, a notable fact has emerged from this incident: the number of government vehicles in the convoy was remarkably low. In reality, the people who accompanied the minister — local residents keen on interacting with him, party workers, and their acquaintances — were travelling in their own private vehicles with evident enthusiasm.

While private cars outnumbered government vehicles in the convoy, the sheer volume of vehicles moving together on the road set off discussions among the general public. With the ongoing crisis in West Asia and prevailing global conditions, fuel conservation has become a national priority. In such a scenario, the public view is that when the Prime Minister himself advocates simplicity and the judicious use of resources, supporters and workers should also exercise restraint in the use of vehicles during public tours.

The message from the public is clear. Local citizens say that when a senior leader visits an area, expressing love and support for them is natural, but if party workers also adopt car pooling, it would lend greater strength to PM Modi’s fuel conservation campaign. This would not only reduce traffic congestion on the roads but also send a positive message in favour of both the environment and the economy.
