With the monsoon approaching, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority is taking extensive measures to prevent waterlogging in the city. A dedicated flood control office will be established to ensure effective management and quick resolution of waterlogging situations during heavy rainfall.
The flood control office will operate round the clock throughout the monsoon season and serve as a central coordination hub for monitoring weather conditions, deploying resources, and addressing citizen complaints. During adverse weather, arrangements will be made to provide immediate assistance to residents and keep city roads passable through the deployment of necessary manpower, machinery, and support systems.
As part of monsoon preparations, GMDA will deploy dedicated manpower for regular cleaning and maintenance of drain inlets, road gullies, and the drainage network. This will ensure rapid drainage of rainwater from Gurugram’s main roads. Special attention will be given to keeping the drainage infrastructure free of silt, garbage, and other obstructions during the monsoon.
To strengthen ground-level relief operations, pumping machinery, mobile tractor-mounted pump sets, DG sets, suction tankers, and other emergency equipment will be kept ready across the city depending on the situation. Borings will also be made available at sensitive locations to prevent flooding and waterlogging during heavy rain. This flexible arrangement will enable quick water drainage assistance and timely intervention in waterlogged areas, power cuts, or emergency situations.
In addition, JCB machines and labour teams will be deployed for emergency operations, de-silting activities, and cleaning of road gullies and drainage infrastructure. Continuous monitoring and coordinated field action will be carried out during the monsoon to ensure minimum inconvenience to citizens and travellers.
GMDA officials have stated that all related teams are being activated in advance to strengthen the city’s flood management capabilities and monsoon preparedness. The authority will also conduct mock drills at all underpasses to test the performance of drainage systems and pumps installed there, ensuring that waterlogging does not occur in these underpasses during the monsoon.
Mock drills at key underpasses will begin from May 15. The objective is to assess the operational readiness of water drainage systems, pumping machinery, and flood relief infrastructure.
According to the schedule, mock drills for underpasses along NHAI will be held on May 15 at Ambience Mall, Subhash Chowk, and Shankar Chowk; on May 18 at IFC Chowk; on May 19 at Signature Tower and Vatika Chowk; on May 20 at Rajiv Chowk, Mehantara Road, and Huda City Centre Underpass; on May 21 at Hero Honda Chowk and JTP Underpass; on May 26 at Sector 110/113 and Sector 109/110 Underpasses; on May 28 at Sector 102/104 Underpass; and on May 29 at Sector 84/36B Underpass.
For underpasses under DLF, including both U-turn underpasses at Cyber City, the mock drill will be conducted on May 18. The mock drill for Sikandarpur Underpass and DLF Phase-I Underpass will be held on May 19 and 20.
Similarly, for underpasses maintained by PWD, including Atul Cutaria Chowk, Mahavir Chowk, and Dhanwapur Underpass, mock drills have been scheduled for May 22, May 25, and May 18.
During these exercises, the pumping machinery, DG sets, water drainage systems, and drain cleaning operations will be fully tested to ensure efficient rainwater discharge during the monsoon. Fire services will also be deployed as needed for filling and testing operations.
