New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has planned a hi-tech metro depot near the existing Mukundpur Metro Depot in the Majlis Park area of the national capital. DMRC has requested 24 acres of land from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for the construction of this facility.

In exchange for the land, DMRC is prepared to pay a total of ₹238.71 crore to DDA. According to PWD Minister Pravin Sahib Singh, the proposed hi-tech metro depot will support newly planned metro lines and strengthen the overall infrastructure of the Delhi Metro network.

The minister further noted that the depot will play a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations. During technical breakdowns or maintenance requirements, metro trains from other stations can be quickly dispatched from this depot, reducing service disruptions across the network. This will make daily commutes significantly easier for lakhs of passengers who rely on the metro system.

According to Singh, the depot is not just a construction project but a critical initiative aimed at improving the everyday travel experience for millions of commuters. The goal is to reduce travel time for passengers at interchange stations by enabling better train management and deployment.

Under Delhi Metro Phase-4, three metro corridors are being developed with a combined length of approximately 65.14 km. These include the Majlis Park–Maujpur stretch, the Janakpuri West–Krishna Nagar section, and the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park segment. A total of 24 km of the corridor has already been made operational from the Mukundpur Depot, where all trains for these lines are currently parked and maintained.

Once the new depot becomes operational, it will facilitate the expansion of services to 11 lines, significantly boosting the metro network’s capacity.

The key Phase-4 corridors include the Janakpuri West–RK Ashram line (Magenta Line), which will connect West Delhi to Central Delhi and is expected to be one of the busiest routes. The Majlis Park–Maujpur line (Pink Line) is fully constructed and set to begin operations for the general public soon. The Aerocity–Tughlakabad line (Golden Line) will connect South Delhi with Aerocity, adding a new dimension to the metro network’s reach.

The establishment of this new hi-tech depot near Mukundpur is expected to be a game-changer for the Delhi Metro system as the city continues to expand its rapid transit infrastructure to meet growing commuter demand.
