While the world is accustomed to the influence of human social media stars, a unique visitor has recently arrived in the Delhi-NCR region whose popularity rivals that of the most famous figures. Aloka the Peace Dog, an Indian Pariah breed, may look like an ordinary dog, but he carries an extraordinary life story that has captured hearts globally. Recently, a special “meet and greet” event was organized for Aloka by ‘Walk for Peace’ at the prestigious The Westin hotel in Gurugram.

The event saw a massive turnout of hundreds of animal lovers, social workers, and wildlife activists from across Delhi-NCR. Attendees were reportedly stunned by Aloka’s immense patience, dignity, and sense of calm. Visitors spent time petting the dog, taking selfies, and listening to Buddhist monks share the miraculous journey of Aloka’s life. Prior to the Gurugram event, former Union Minister and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi also met with Aloka in Delhi to express her appreciation for the dog.

Aloka, whose name signifies “divine light” or “knowledge” in the Pali and Sanskrit languages, has a backstory that reads like a movie script. In 2022, Aloka was wandering as a stray on the outskirts of Kolkata. During this time, a group of monks led by Vietnamese-American monk Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara was conducting a 112-day peace walk across India. On the sixth day of their journey, Aloka spotted the serene group and began following them silently.

Without any formal training or coercion, Aloka accompanied the monks for over 100 days, walking barefoot through rural Indian paths all the way to the Nepal border. Despite facing a car accident and suffering from serious illness during this trek, Aloka recovered each time and returned to the caravan. Impressed by his loyalty and peaceful nature, the monks adopted him and, after completing the necessary legal formalities, took him to Fort Worth, Texas, in the United States.

Aloka’s international fame surged during his participation in the ‘Walk for Peace 2025-2026’ in the USA. Starting from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center in Texas, the journey spanned approximately 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles), passing through 10 different states before reaching the US Capitol in Washington D.C. This grueling journey lasted between 108 to 120 days. Throughout the trek, Aloka marched step-by-step with the monks despite freezing cold, heavy rain, and exhausting terrains.

The primary goal of the journey was to spread awareness, compassion, and peace across the globe. The path was not without challenges; near South Carolina, Aloka suffered an ACL (ligament) injury in his leg. Even after requiring surgery, the resilient dog recovered and rejoined the walk for its final stages. Now approximately 4 years old, Aloka is a pure Indian Pariah dog. He possesses a distinct natural white heart-shaped mark on his forehead, which many see as a symbol of his role as a messenger of peace. His saffron and white fur also mirrors the colors of the robes worn by the Buddhist monks.

Aloka has built a massive digital following, with over 4.82 lakh (482K) followers on Instagram and millions of fans across TikTok and other social media platforms. During his travels, people around the world track his location via live maps and wait along the routes to provide him with treats. Those who attended the Gurugram event noted that Aloka serves as living proof that peace and compassion transcend languages and species. This “little monk dog,” who rose from the streets of Kolkata to spread a message of peace globally, has won the hearts of people everywhere.
