From Trash Picker to Delhi’s Famous Chef: Lilyma Khan’s Extraordinary Journey
Lilyma Khan, now recognized as Delhi’s most prominent chef, transformed her life from one of extreme hardship to culinary acclaim. Born in Taimoor Nagar, New Delhi, her childhood was marked by devastating losses when she lost her father at age 5 and her mother to tuberculosis six months later.
Further tragedy struck as her older sister died by suicide and her brother struggled with depression and drug addiction. When her brother sold their family home for Rs 10,000, Khan and her younger brother were forced to live on the streets.
At just a young girl, Khan joined other children waking at 4 am to collect trash from Friends Colony streets, surviving on only one meal daily. She and her peers foraged through dustbins of local restaurants and even McDonald’s outlets, consuming leftover chicken bones and half-eaten burgers for survival.
The young Khan endured sexual harassment from predatory men, often her late father’s friends. Girls slept behind old mattresses in shop alleys for protection. An NGO intervened when she was 11, providing education and placing her in an orphanage in Kashmiri Gate.
At the orphanage, Khan discovered her passion for cooking. After completing Class 12, she trained through the Creative Services Support Group (CSSG) and began working in restaurants. By 2012, a regular visitor to the orphanage recognized her talent, helping her secure a position at a fine dining restaurant with a salary of Rs 7,000.
Her remarkable transformation from scavenging through trash to leading culinary kitchens exemplifies resilience and determination. Today, she stands among India’s most famous chefs, inspiring countless stories of overcoming adversity through hard work and perseverance.
