Gurugram Nagar Nigam has uncovered a major scam involving private waste collection agencies. These agencies were awarded a ₹23 crore tender to manage garbage across all eight zones but deployed only 369 vehicles instead of the required 591 during a surprise check. This shortfall represents a gap of nearly 38-48%, exposing a widespread fraud.
Under the tender agreement, private contractors were obligated to deploy 591 vehicles daily throughout Gurugram. However, on Wednesday, teams from the Nagar Nigam conducted physical verification at Tau Devi Lal Stadium. They found only 369 vehicles present, prompting immediate scrutiny. A detailed breakdown revealed that Zone 6, for instance, mandated 53 vehicles but only 40 showed up, marking a direct shortfall of 13 vehicles.
Authorities confirmed that some agencies were merely submitting paperwork without actual deployment. The discrepancy led to severe public inconvenience as residents struggled with irregular waste collection. Officials noted that contractors were manipulating records while failing to meet basic service standards. This fraudulent practice affected multiple sectors, including Sector 9 and 9A, where residents were allegedly charged extra fees under false pretenses.
The investigation is now moving into action. Mayor Raj Rani Malhotra issued a strict ultimatum, stating that if vehicles are not fully deployed by Monday, punitive measures will follow. She emphasized that citizen welfare is the top priority and warned of heavy financial penalties and blacklisting for non-compliant contractors. Her statement included a rare admission of negligence within the system, adding that officials responsible for oversight will also face accountability.
“Nagar Nigam’s first priority is to provide citizens quality sanitation services. Contractors are misusing the system by deploying fewer vehicles than mandated. If full deployment isn’t achieved across all zones by Monday, strict penalties will be imposed, and vendors will be blacklisted immediately. Accountability will also extend to negligent officials,” Malhotra said.
Going forward, Nagar Nigam staff will conduct door-to-door surveys to verify waste collection processes. They aim to document irregularities and collect resident feedback to plug loopholes. Legal action is expected to follow soon. The scam underscores systemic gaps in urban governance. It also highlights how public-private partnerships often fail without rigorous monitoring. Residents can expect improved services once the cleanup concludes. Full compliance will determine whether penalties actually hit the guilty. The city’s waste management future now hinges on Monday’s outcome.
