Gurgaon Lok Sabha Elections 2024

Gurgaon Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Gurugram Lok Sabha constituency is one of the 10 parliamentary seats in Haryana. It consists of nine assembly constituencies: Bawal, Rewari, Pataudi, Badshahpur, Gurugram, Sohna, Nuh, Firozpur Jhirka, Punhana. BJP won the 2019 election with 61% vote share, followed by Congress with 34.4% vote share. BJP is leading in Haryana and Gurugram Lok Sabha seats.

Rao Inderjit Singh, who has been a three-time MP, is the BJP candidate. In 2009, he became MP from Congress. However, Singh has been a BJP MP since 2014. After 10 years in Parliament, he is expected to raise his voice against the ruling party to some extent. But weak opposition gives edge to BJP.

Rao Inderjit Singh has dominated the politics of south Haryana for three decades, and has significant influence among the numerically dominant Ahirs in the constituency.

Rao Inderjit Singh is known to be a straight talking person and he often does not hesitate to speak openly even to the Chief Minister in public forums. The credit goes to him for his efforts in bringing AIIMS, Defense University, Dwarka Expressway, Commerce College etc. to South Haryana.

Congress’s Ajay Singh was considered the favorite candidate against Rao Inderjit in Gurugram, but the party has fielded actor-politician Raj Babbar. ‘Captain’ Ajay Singh Yadav’s father had defeated Rao Inderjit’s father Rao Birendra Singh in 1952.

Under the Khattar government, the BJP is regarded favorably for its pro-development policies and initiatives. The urban voters of Gurugram are completely with the party.

Focusing on infrastructure projects, urban rejuvenation and industrial development has been the main thrust for the BJP. For example, Dwarka Expressway, metro connectivity expansion and better road network.

Gurugram is a corporate hub, where industries, businesses and multinational companies have a significant presence. The BJP’s emphasis on economic reforms, ease of doing business and investment-friendly policies is in line with the interests of the corporate sector.

The party’s pro-business stance has received support from voters who are business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals.

However, urban voters constitute only 20% in Gurugram Lok Sabha constituency. Despite urban change, voting in Gurugram is still influenced by caste, religion and local issues.

The share of people from Muslim, Yadav and SC/ST communities among the registered voters is about 50%. Punjabis and Jats are also important groups in this constituency.

Past trends show that around 80% of Yadavs vote for the Yadav candidate, and Meo Muslims collectively support the Meo candidate.

The presence of many Muslim candidates in the election field may lead to division of votes, which may help the BJP. Meo Muslims uniting behind a Meo Muslim candidate could also lead to polarization of Hindus, potentially benefiting the BJP.
