Union Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation stone for a new high‑security jail in Delhi’s Narela on Tuesday, the project will cost ₹100 crore with funding split between the central Home Ministry and the Delhi government, the facility is designed to hold more than 250 inmates and will help ease the overcrowding at Tihar jail, the announcement was made during an online ceremony held in RK Puram and Crime officials confirmed the details.
As Delhi’s prison population grew, officials said the capital needed a modern facility that could meet contemporary security standards, the new jail will differ from traditional prisons by using advanced surveillance and automated control systems, planners hope the design will set a benchmark for prison infrastructure across the country.
The jail will employ a radial‑axial layout that allows central monitoring of each wing from a control point, every inmate will be housed in an isolated cell to minimize contact and reduce gang networking, the facility will be equipped with AI CCTV, body‑worn cameras, biometric access, automated locking and full‑body scanners.
The new facility will incorporate AI CCTV and biometric access controls.
And the complex will also include an in‑house court, video‑conference rooms and a command‑and‑control centre that runs 24/7, mobile signal jammers and anti‑tunneling technology will be installed to prevent external communication, it will reduce Tihar’s load, the level of technology integration is unusual for a new prison, which is unusual for the region.
With the new facility online, Tihar will see a noticeable decline in inmate numbers, allowing better maintenance of existing cells, Delhi’s Home Ministry praised the project as a step toward safer corrections and improved rehabilitation services, construction is expected to begin shortly after the foundation ceremony, with completion targeted within two years.
