The Delhi Mumbai Expressway witnessed a devastating fire when a moving vehicle suddenly caught flames, locking its doors from the inside and trapping all occupants.
Six people lost their lives, five of whom were members of a single family from Shyopur, Madhya Pradesh, who were returning from a pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi temple after fulfilling a vow following a long illness.
The driver, Vinod Mehra, was eventually rescued but suffered 80 per cent burns and died while receiving treatment in hospital.
The deceased family members included Santosh, his wife Shashi, daughters Sakshi and Raghavi, and his mother‑in‑law Parvati.
Alwar SP stated that the Arti ga involved had CNG installed, and initial inquiries pointed toward a short circuit as the likely trigger.
Investigators suspect a short circuit in the CNG‑powered car, but a forensic examination will determine the exact cause of the blaze.
The incident highlights the risks despite the expressway’s heavy tolls, extensive CCTV coverage, and emergency infrastructure, as fire services arrived late, leading to extensive damage including melted bone fragments.
