A devastating fire in southeast Delhi’s Govindpuri claimed three lives in the early hours of Friday, including a 28-year-old entrepreneur who had been the family’s sole provider since his father’s death from cancer two years ago.

The blaze broke out around 2.31 am in a five-storey residential building. Police suspect an electrical short circuit on the ground floor, where several two-wheelers caught fire, filling the structure with thick smoke.

Pankaj, known affectionately as “Kuku” to relatives, died alongside his maternal grandmother Sushila Devi, 70, and younger sister Soni, 20. His mother Guddi Devi, 50, who is speech-impaired, and 18-year-old sister Mani are undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital and remain in critical but stable condition.

The family had relocated from Prahladpur to the Govindpuri flat in November 2024 after Pankaj fulfilled his dream of purchasing a home. He ran an online mobile accessories business, managing orders by phone and supplying products to customers. His earnings covered all household expenses and funded his sisters’ education and career aspirations.

Soni worked as a designer while Mani was pursuing a website development course. Relatives said the family had recently begun discussing the sisters’ future and marriage prospects.

“He was everything for the family,” said maternal uncle Suresh Chand Pandey, 50. “After his father passed away, he took responsibility for the household, his sisters’ education and all expenses. Whatever the family needed, he managed it.”

Pandey added that Pankaj paid the flat’s monthly installments himself and took pride in providing the family with their own modest two-bedroom home.

Residents noted that many families in the building were away on vacation, which may have prevented a higher death toll. Neighbours played a crucial role in the emergency response.

The family learned of the tragedy hours later after repeated calls went unanswered. “We kept calling everyone, but none of the phones was connecting. Then we learned what had happened. We first went to the house and later came to the hospital,” Pandey said.

The loss deepens a grief that began with the death of Pankaj’s father Subhash two years ago after battling cancer.
