Commuters traveling between Gurugram and Faridabad may receive significant relief starting July 2, 2026, as the toll collection period at the Bandhwari Toll Plaza is set to expire. This expressway, which traverses the Aravalli hills, serves as the primary connectivity link between the two cities. Unless the government issues a new directive to extend the collection period, the road could become entirely toll-free from tomorrow, removing the financial burden and traffic delays for thousands of daily users.
According to available data, approximately 55,000 to 60,000 vehicles utilize this specific route every day. The removal of the toll plaza is expected to reduce the severe congestion often experienced during morning and evening peak hours. Currently, these traffic jams cause substantial delays for school buses, office-going employees, and emergency services, including ambulances. A transition to a toll-free system would result in savings regarding money, fuel, and travel time for these commuters.
The Public Works Department (PWD) stated that the original contract with the private company responsible for the road’s construction was scheduled to end on May 31, 2026. However, the government extended this deadline twice following requests from the company. These extensions were granted to compensate for financial losses incurred during the demonetization period and the COVID-19 pandemic. The first extension pushed the date to June 12, and the second extension set the final deadline for July 2, 2026.
Local residents, industrialists, and public representatives have conducted various protests and “Mahapanchayats” to demand the permanent removal of the toll plaza. During a recent Mahapanchayat, officials from the PWD provided assurances that preparations were being made to close the toll after July 2. This long-standing demand from the community has put pressure on the administration to ensure the expressway becomes free for public use.
Charandeep Singh, the Executive Engineer of the PWD, confirmed that a detailed report regarding the expiration of the contract and the ongoing local opposition has been submitted to the state government. The final decision now rests with the government, which will determine whether toll collection will be stopped completely or if a different administrative approach will be adopted. The outcome will be decided whether the current arrangement ends or if a new order is issued to maintain the plaza.
In addition to the Bandhwari location, the future of the Nunera/Pakhal toll plaza on the Sohna-Ballabhgarh route is also expected to be decided on July 2. Millions of vehicle owners across the NCR region are now awaiting the final government order to determine if these routes will be opened for free transit. The decision will impact the daily commute of thousands who rely on these corridors for transit between major hubs in the National Capital Region.
