A 35-year-old man from Gubhana village in Jhajjar, Haryana, was arrested by Gurugram police on July 1, 2026, for allegedly setting his live-in partner on fire after she learned he was married. The victim, identified as Mrityika, died nine days after the incident following prolonged treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi.
The relationship between Suneel Kumar and Mrityika began after she visited his shop in Gurugram to sell gold nearly two years ago. Their friendship gradually turned romantic, but tensions rose when she discovered he was already married. On June 18, Mrityika went to his store, leading to a heated argument. The next day, June 19, Suneel allegedly poured kerosene on her clothes and set her ablaze after another dispute.
She was rushed to Artemis Hospital in Gurugram before being referred to Delhi for advanced care. However, her condition deteriorated. Her mother initially refused to file a police complaint out of fear. After Mrityika’s death on June 27, her brother approached Sector-9 police station in Gurugram on June 30, alleging Suneel had threatened to kill her and her family if she revealed the truth.
The case took a dramatic turn when police recovered a kerosene bottle and Suneel’s mobile phone from his shop. He owns a gold bangle store in the city and had been living with Mrityika for over a year. Despite the severity of the crime, authorities have not disclosed further details about the investigation.
Suneel was produced in court on July 1 and remanded into police custody for two days. The investigation continues as officials gather evidence to build a strong case against him. The incident has sparked outrage in the local community.
Police spokesperson Sandeep Kumar confirmed the arrest and stated charges were filed under relevant sections of the law. The motive—rooted in secrecy and betrayal—has left many questioning the dynamics of such relationships. The case underscores the ongoing challenges in addressing domestic violence and abuse in urban settings.
