Dirty sewer water from three villages of Gurugram, Bahrampur, Maidawas and Ullawas is flowing into Yamuna through storm drains. The team of GMDA and Municipal Corporation inspected and found that the Municipal Corporation has made many illegal sewer connections. Dirty water from about 20 thousand families of these villages is flowing into Yamuna without treatment, which is a violation of environmental rules.
New Gurugram. Dirty sewer water from three villages of Gurugram, Bahrampur, Maidavas and Ullawas is reaching the Yamuna river through storm drains. On Wednesday, a joint team of Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Municipal Corporation inspected the spot and took stock of the situation and directed the Municipal Corporation to remove illegal sewer connections within 15 days.
During inspection it was revealed that the Municipal Corporation has made illegal sewer connections to storm drains at about 20 places. About 20 thousand families live in these three villages, whose dirty water is going directly into the Yamuna without treatment. This is a serious environmental violation and also a disregard of the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
People are troubled by the smell and pollution
This dirty water passes through Barsati Nala No. 1, 2 and 3 (Badshahpur Nala). These drains emit a strong stench and people in the nearby sectors and colonies are extremely troubled by it. The same problem exists in Palam Vihar, where dirty water is flowing behind about 200 houses situated on the banks of the drain.
The situation worsened due to non-operation of STP
In many residential societies from Sector 58 to 67, the sewer treatment plants (STPs) are either not operational or are working at incomplete capacity. Despite this, the Pollution Control Board is issuing NOC to them every year. BPTP Astaire Garden Society of Sector-70A has also accused another nearby society of discharging dirty water in the open.
Dirty water was found in the test
Haryana State Pollution Control Board had taken water samples from storm drains, which were found to be highly polluted. This is a serious threat to the aquatic life of Najafgarh Lake and Yamuna. GMDA has given a clear warning to the Municipal Corporation that if there is no improvement in 15 days, then illegal sewer connections will be disconnected.
