In a decisive challenge, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee held court at an election meeting in Howrah, directly questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the boat incident in the Hooghly Arm of the Ganga. Speaking with unyielding authority, she made a pointed comparison between the cleanliness of Bengal’s Ganga and the pollution of the Yamuna in Delhi.
“What’s this? Our Ganga is clean, yet you manage a boat ride with the PM. Meanwhile, the Yamuna here is a toxic river,” she accused, highlighting the stark contrast. “Is he capable of taking a dip in Delhi’s Yamuna?” she questioned, directing her challenge squarely at Modi.
The hashtag #RaghavChadha gained traction after his acknowledgment of Didi’s allegations, which added fuel to the ongoing discussions surrounding political strategies and environmental awareness.
PM Modi’s presence in the issue is seen not just as an occasional endorsement of Bengal’s offerings but is increasingly becoming emblematic of the state’s tourism narrative.
During another rally in Port, Banerjee expanded on the critique, labeling the PM’s boat ride “nothing but a photo-op for political gain.”
Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool’s national general secretary, suggested that the excursion was a staged act.
“Traveling and filming reels of Modi in Bengal has made people aware of its beauty and the efforts put by the government to ensure its rivers are clean,” he said. He criticized the government for failing to disclose the true state of the infrastructure amidst pressure from the state’s tourism sector.
