Government rations could be cut off for 20,000 more families in Gurugram, adjacent to Delhi. The Haryana government is re-examining eligibility under new rules. This could lead to families receiving government rations despite not being eligible being removed from the ration list.
The main reason for this is that those with an annual income of more than 1.80 lakh rupees will not receive ration. This includes having a government job or pension, or not receiving rations for six consecutive months. Ration cards are being linked to Haryana’s Family ID card, under which rations are being discontinued if the cardholder’s annual income is high.
According to the District Food Supply Controller Department, there were a total of 1,91,249 ration card holders in Gurugram in September 2024. From September to November 2025, rations have been discontinued on 36,000 cards. One unit of ration per card includes five kilograms of ration, two kilograms of mustard oil, and one kilogram of sugar. There are now 1,22,792 cards at 220 ration depots, including 18,711 AAY and 1,04,081 BPL cardholders.
The department has made these preparations.
According to the department, the Haryana government is linking the family identity card to the ration card. Under this, BPL families with an annual income of more than 1.80 lakh rupees and AAY families with an annual income of more than 1.20 lakh rupees are not eligible for government rations. Families with any member in a government job or pension are excluded from the benefits of free rations. Furthermore, if a family does not purchase grain from a ration shop for six consecutive months, their benefits may be permanently discontinued. All ration cards are being linked to the family identity card and Aadhaar card. This will remove the names of those who are ineligible from the list.
Naresh Kumar, District Food Supply Controller, Gurugram, said, “The government is linking ration cards to the family ID. Cardholders with annual incomes of more than 1.75 lakh rupees will soon have their rations discontinued.”
