A harrowing incident occurred on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway on May 1, 2026, where a car caught fire while in motion, resulting in the death of all six occupants, including a family of five. The vehicle was traveling back to their village after a visit to the Mandir of Mata Vaishno Devi.

The family from Shyopur, Madhya Pradesh, had been missing since they embarked on their journey to the temple, prompting a search. Unfortunately, when they reached the expressway near Alwar, Rajasthan, the car started burning out of nowhere.

The fire caused all the car’s doors to lock from the inside, preventing any escape. The entire family, including the driver, was engulfed in flames, leading to their untimely demise. Even the driver, Vinod Mehra, who was somehow managed to be pulled out, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

This unfortunate incident highlights the dangers associated with the expressway, which is the most expensive in the country, with heavy tolls and CCTV surveillance. Despite these precautions, the fire brigade was delayed in arriving at the scene, leading to more fatalities due to the burning of bones.

The police suspect that the vehicle was equipped with a CNG engine, and while the initial attack seems to have been due to a short circuit, the true cause of the fire will be established through a forensic investigation.
