Delhi High Court has granted bail to Khurram Parvez, a “human rights” activist who has been in judicial custody for over four years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The decision was taken on Wednesday by Justices Navin Chawla and Ravinder Dudeja.
Parvez was arrested on 22 November 2021 on allegations of providing terror funding, conspiratorial involvement to wage war against India, and recruiting youths for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). He had been detained since the arrest without a forthcoming trial date.
The court noted that the period of incarceration was lengthy and there was no likelihood of the trial concluding soon. As a result, it approved bail for the activist.
Parvez’s release comes after more than four years of detention, during which no significant judicial progress had been made. The High Court’s order underscores the importance of balancing national security concerns with the right to liberty.
