The BJP on Saturday defended the hospitalisation of activist Sonam Wangchuk in Delhi, saying the step followed directions from the Delhi High Court. Wangchuk was moved to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police earlier in the day. He had been on an indefinite hunger strike for 21 days at Jantar Mantar.

The ruling party stated the shift was prompted by concerns over his deteriorating health. It also said the action was in accordance with court directions. Opposition parties had criticised the removal from the protest site.

And the BJP accused critics of trying to turn the hospitalisation into a political issue. Shahnawaz Hussain, BJP national spokesperson and former Union minister, said the Delhi High Court had ordered that Wangchuk’s health be regularly monitored. “He has been admitted to the hospital for a medical examination to monitor his health and ensure that he remains healthy. That is the only reason,” Hussain said.

Amit Malviya, BJP IT department head, also backed the move. He said authorities acted responsibly while balancing court directions with the need to protect Wangchuk’s health. “Sonam Wangchuk’s preliminary medical report is now in the public domain. Importantly, it records that the medical examination was conducted with his own consent,” Malviya claimed in a post on X while sharing a purported medical report.

So what exactly is the outrage about? Malviya added that following the Delhi High Court’s directions, authorities shifted Wangchuk to a hospital to facilitate recovery after his health deteriorated during the fast. He asked whether the opposition would have preferred his condition worsen merely to sustain a political spectacle. “Ensuring timely medical care in a situation like this is the responsible course of action, not a matter for manufactured controversy,” he said.

Several opposition leaders had criticised the Centre over the removal. The list included Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. That’s a rare admission of cross-party criticism from the source itself.

Police said the move was made on medical advice and in compliance with court directions. The BJP’s response came after those opposition statements on 18 July 2026. Next steps depend on Wangchuk’s medical condition and any further Delhi HC orders.
