Delhi Endures Sticky Heat; Light Rains Expected This Week
In the capital city of Delhi, temperatures today have climbed to scorching levels, while high humidity makes the heat feel even more oppressive. On Sunday, the maximum temperature recorded was 38.9 °C, but the heat‑index, which factors in humidity, reached 43.4 °C, creating a “feels‑like” temperature that is hard to bear.
The Met Office reports that at 2:30 p.m. the actual ambient temperature was 37.2 °C. However, the wet‑bulb effect caused by the dense moisture in the air pushed the perceived temperature up to 43.4 °C, a metric that has led to widespread complaints from residents who say the heat is almost impossible to endure.
Despite the oppressive heat, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the weather is unlikely to experience any significant change in the next seven days. It has, however, issued a forecast for light showers, sporadic rain, thunder and strong winds over the weekend and the following Monday, which could provide a brief relief for Delhi’s heat‑stricken populace.
Sunday’s minimum temperature was recorded at 28.8 °C, just 1 °C above the typical low for this time of year, indicating that the city’s daily temperature swing remains relatively wide. No color‑coded weather warnings have been issued at this time, suggesting that the IMD does not foresee any severe weather events beyond the mentioned light showers.
Rainfall statistics for June show that Delhi has received only 31.2 mm of precipitation to date, far below the month’s average of 74.1 mm. The city has therefore experienced a notably dry June so far, with rainfall significantly less than what is normally expected for this period.
Even with the high temperatures, Delhi’s air quality remains within the “moderate” category. On Sunday, the Air Quality Index (AQI) registered at 127, which falls under the moderate range. Throughout June, 18 days have been classified as moderate in terms of air quality, while only three days have reached the satisfactory level.
Looking ahead, the IMD anticipates that Monday’s maximum temperature will fall between 37 °C and 39 °C. By the 26th of June, temperatures could again approach the 40 °C mark. The forecast for the remainder of the month predicts only slight improvements, with the possibility of brief, isolated showers and accompanying thunderstorms, along with gusty winds that could help break the stifling humidity.
City officials and residents alike are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities during peak sun hours, and make use of any forecasted rain to cool down. The upcoming light showers and increased wind activity could provide a temporary respite from the city’s ongoing heat wave.
As June progresses, Delhi’s weather pattern continues to reflect a combination of high temperatures, substantial humidity, and a shortfall in rainfall, underscoring the need for vigilance and preparedness as the city navigates the challenges of a hot, dry summer.
