Delhi Police has taken into custody the driver and the conductor of a private sleeper bus accused of raping a 30‑year‑old woman in the Nangloi area of West Delhi. The incident is reported to have occurred on the night of 11 May 2026.

The victim, a mother of four who resides in a slum cluster near the outskirts of Delhi, told a magistrate and police that she was returning home after assisting her brother around 12:15 am. She said she was travelling toward Madhuban Chowk and stopped near Saraswati Vihar bus stand, where a private sleeper bus with curtains over the windows approached.

According to her statement, she boarded the bus and found three men inside. One man alighted after a short while, leaving the driver and the conductor – identified as Umesh of Agra and Ramendra of Hathras, Uttar Pradesh – inside the vehicle. The woman alleges that the two men drove the bus to a secluded spot in Nangloi, approximately 7 km from where she was picked up, and then sexually assaulted her.

The accused, however, maintain that the encounter was a “monetary dispute.” Police note that an argument over money reportedly broke out between the woman and the two men. The victim is said to have used Umesh’s phone to request money from Ramendra, who later refused and left the bus. She then used the same phone to contact police.

Senior police officials arrived at the scene shortly after the complaint and arrested both accused at the location. The woman underwent a medical examination, after which an FIR was lodged under Sections 64 (rape), 70 (gang‑rape) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Both suspects were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.

Investigators are verifying the claims made by the accused and are examining all angles of the case. The victim’s statement has also been recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Police are reviewing CCTV footage to trace the bus route and are conducting forensic analysis of the seized vehicle for additional evidence.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to the Delhi Police chief, demanding swift and time‑bound action. The commission seeks a detailed Action‑Taken Report within seven days.

A poll attached to the report asks readers what they consider the most effective measure to improve women’s safety in public transport, offering options such as stronger night‑time security and enhanced surveillance systems.
