Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to citizens to reduce petrol and diesel usage and urging private companies to implement work-from-home, over 2,500 private companies in Gurugram have begun preparations to transition employees to remote work starting June 1.
The move aims to address challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. IT professionals note that setting up work-from-home requires significant infrastructure to ensure robust cybersecurity and prevent data theft. This includes providing laptops, video conferencing tools, cloud-based project management software, and Virtual Private Network (VPN) facilities. Developing these secure systems is estimated to take 10 to 12 days.
Once the infrastructure is ready, a management team conducts on-site checks to eliminate any data breach risks. While the system works smoothly after initial setup, some employees face challenges working from home due to space constraints and family disturbances, leading to requests to return to office mode.
After completing all setup procedures, IT companies plan to commence work-from-home for their staff from June 1. It is noted that out of approximately 6,000 IT and telecom companies in Gurugram, only about 2,500 are able to implement this model, as many firms—such as those in cybersecurity—cannot operate remotely. The policy will apply only to companies where tasks can be performed from home.
A key objective of the work-from-home implementation is to reduce vehicle usage on roads, thereby decreasing traffic congestion and lowering petrol and diesel consumption. It is also anticipated to boost productivity. While some companies have already had around 20% of their workforce on remote schedules since the Covid period, the Prime Minister’s appeal is set to expand this coverage significantly.
