Delhi sweltered under extreme heat on April 26 with the maximum temperature at Ridge touching 44.5°C, the highest for April in four years. The India Meteorological Department has forecast light rain and wind between April 27 and 29, providing some relief from the scorching heat.

Delhi experienced its hottest April day in four years on April 26, with the maximum temperature at Ridge observatory reaching 44.5°C. The India Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave alert for several parts of the capital.

Safdarjung recorded a maximum temperature of 42.8°C, which is 5.1°C above normal. This was the hottest April day at this station since 2022, when temperatures had reached 43.5°C on April 29-30. Palam recorded 42.5°C, which is 3.9°C above normal and also the highest for April in four years. Previously, Palam had recorded 44°C on April 30, 2022.

Other areas in the capital recorded even higher temperatures. Lodhi Road reported 42.6°C, while Aya Nagar recorded 43.2°C, which is 4.8°C above normal. Heatwave conditions prevailed in Safdarjung, Lodhi Road, Ridge, and Aya Nagar areas.

Minimum temperatures also remained elevated. Safdarjung recorded 25.2°C, Palam 26.8°C, and Ridge 26.3°C. The India Meteorological Department stated that heatwave conditions may persist in some areas on April 27 as well.

According to the weather forecast, light clouds are expected on April 27 with winds blowing at speeds of 20 to 40 km per hour. The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 42°C with minimum temperature around 26°C.

From April 27 to 29, light rain and wind are expected to provide relief from the intense heat. During this period, temperatures are expected to range between 39°C and 43°C, with minimum temperatures between 25°C and 28°C. The weather is expected to clear up on April 30.

The pollution levels in Delhi remained in the poor category on April 26. According to the Central Pollution Control Board’s air bulletin, Delhi’s Air Quality Index stood at 243. The primary pollutant was PM10. Neighbouring cities also reported poor air quality: Ghaziabad (316), Greater Noida (326), Noida (284), Gurgaon (197), and Faridabad (109).

Pollution is expected to remain in the poor category on April 26 and 27. It may improve to the moderate category on April 28 before deteriorating again to poor or very poor levels thereafter.
